Book Club

Our troops have a lending library that any girl can borrow from. As girls read books from the library they can earn patches. We have a variety of books at all levels, so all girls can participate.

Girls are responsible for talking to their Troop Librarian and making sure any books they borrow are marked as out. Just like with library books, girls should be encouraged to take care of any books they borrow. We want to make sure these books last a long time for all scouts to enjoy.

We wish to foster a love of reading in scouts. Participation in the Book Club is based on a scout’s desire to participate. While we encourage girls to read, they are not required to do so. This should NOT be viewed as a competition.

Be a Reader Patch

The Bee A Reader Patch is offered through Girl Scouts of Southern New England—Rhode Island. To earn the patch, a girl will need to read four books (1 book to earn the patch, and a bead for each additional book).

Read to Lead Louisiana Patch

The Read to Lead Louisiana Patch is offered through Girl Scouts Louisiana East. This patch program provides an opportunity for girls who do not read a lot to get involved too!

To earn the patch, girls must complete the first *activity, and two other activities below:

  • *Read a book of your choice and have a discussion with your troop/group, parent/guardian, or a friend.
  • Visit your local library and learn about getting your own library card

HarperCollins Book Patches

Girl Scouts has been working with HarperCollins to publish a series of books for young readers. As part of that, they are encouraging girls to read them by offering patches for girls who read and complete activities associated with the books. Please refer to the discussion guide for the associated book.

We have one troop copy of each book, and the books are also available through BCPL.

There are eight associated books:

One book, The Amazing Daisies Make Ice Cream, will not be released until May 12, 2026.

Raise Your Hand Patch

The Raise Your Hand Patch is offered through Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital, and is a tie-in with the book of the same name. Girls can earn the patch by signing a pledge to commit to raising their hand in class, and recruiting 3 other girls (they don’t have to be scouts) to also raise their hand. Then they need to reflect on how raising their hand made them feel. Refer to the guide for complete instructions.

We have one troop copy of the book.

Laura Ingalls Wilder Patch

Laura Ingalls Wilder is an American author famous for her stories about her families travels across the Midwest in a covered wagon. The series, called Little House, has been a favorite of girls since it was first published. It inspired a tv series, a movie, and a miniseries based on the books. Learn about Laura Ingalls Wilder while immersing yourself in the pioneer life.

The Living Like Laura Patch is offered through Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois. Refer to the patch requirements.

One of the requirements to earn this patch is reading one of the books in the Little House series. We currently do not have any, but you can borrow a book from BCPL.

Be a Partner With the World: Pax Lodge England

The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) is made up of a number of member countries. WAGGGS runs five World Centers in England (Pax Lodge, London), Mexico (Our Cabana, Cuernavaca), Switzerland (Our Chalet, Adelboden), India(Sangam, Pune), and a moving center across Africa (Kusafiri). These five incredible destinations—created just for Girl Scouts like you—are fun, affordable, and safe places to stay while girls broaden their horizons and make new friends.

Learn about the United Kingdom (UK), the history of Girl Guides, and Pax Lodge by reading a book in a series, called Brownies by Caroline Plaisted, about a Brownie troop in England. There are eight books in the series.

When you read the books in the series, you will find that the characters use different words for things we do in the US. They even spell some words differently! As you read you will learn about Girl Guides in the UK, and a bit about England too.

After you have read two books in the series dive into learning more about the UK and Girl Guides. Refer to the guide for the requirements.

Our troop has a copy of the old UK Brownie Guide Handbook and Brownie Guide Badge Book, as well as a current UK Brownie Badge book. We also have a copy of the old UK Guide Badge book and Guide Handbook (equivalent to Juniors). You can use these as references to help you learn more about Girl Guides.
